Absolute Vs Incremental Digital Caliper Uk
An absolute digital caliper remembers a fixed origin, so switching it on does not normally force you to close the jaws and set zero again. An incremental caliper measures from the last zero point, so after power loss or a battery change it usually needs a clean closed-jaw zero before you trust it.
The behaviour that matters at the bench
The difference shows up when a caliper is used intermittently. In a cold UK garage, you might pick it up, measure one part, put it down, then come back after tea. With an absolute system, the origin behaviour can reduce the little re-zero ritual. With an incremental system, re-zeroing is normal maintenance, not necessarily a defect.
The Mitutoyo ABS Digimatic caliper manual describes ABS measurement after power-on and INC comparison measurement. The AIMS Industrial digital caliper guide explains the broader distinction between absolute and incremental calipers in buying terms.
Absolute does not mean more accurate by magic
Origin memory is not the same as measurement accuracy. A badly handled absolute caliper can still read poorly if the jaws are dirty, the part has a burr, or the user squeezes too hard. The accuracy class, jaw condition, beam smoothness and measuring technique still matter.
Where temporary zero is useful
Incremental or INC mode is not a weakness when used deliberately. It is useful for comparison jobs: zero on a reference block, then read how far a part is over or under that reference. Woodworkers use this idea when comparing board thicknesses; machinists use it when sneaking up on a dimension.
Decision table
| Need | Feature to value |
|---|---|
| You pick the caliper up for stop-start jobs all day | Absolute origin retention |
| You always clean, close and zero before measuring | Incremental can be perfectly workable |
| You compare parts to a reference dimension | Temporary zero or INC mode |
| You need better final shaft measurement | A micrometer, not just ABS branding |
Watch the wording
ABS branding is a specific feature class in trade channels, including UK listings such as the Mitutoyo UK CoolantProof ABS caliper page. Do not assume every caliper with a zero button has the same absolute encoder behaviour. Read the manual or listing carefully.
When a general caliper is still the right next step
If your current need is everyday outside, inside, depth and step measuring in a garage or workshop, a sealed stainless digital caliper can still be the practical first tool. For that use case, see the Nanka Pro digital caliper product details before you decide whether you need a specialist gauge instead.
